Gay Local Tips in Palm Springs

Insider Tips Palm Springs: A gay oasis

If you ever have the need to just forget the world and take shelter in La La Land, Palm Springs has it all. Our host Allen confirms just that with his list of addresses for lunch, drinks, nights out or working on your tan. This gay oasis is not only a place to grow old and gray; there's very little that can't be had. So, head to Palm Springs and stay like a gay local!

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

There's something for everyone in Palm Springs, where on warm, breezy nights, all the stars come out to play. Located just two hours from Los Angeles and San Diego, it's always been a popular gay getaway. But its 330 days of sunshine each year and casual resort atmosphere is what attracts people from all over the globe.

The city’s storied Hollywood legacy, Native American heritage, stunning mid-century modern architecture and vibrant village featuring outdoor dining, gay bars and lots of shopping, is the reason why Palm Springs is truly like no place else on Earth.

How gay-friendly is Palm Springs? What’s gay life like there?

There’s a huge gay population here (around half of our annual residents) and some even jokingly refer to Palm Springs as a "gay retirement village." And, let’s be real, it’s an awesome place to grow gay and gray.

But, in truth, you'll see every type of gay under the sun here. There are plenty of cool gay bars, and whether you’re looking for a clothing-optional option or something a little more private to swim and get your tan on, there's very little that can't be had.

What are the best gay events that take place in your city?

Gay Pride in November, Leather Pride the week before and the Halloween gay block party are three of my favorites. Palm Springs has an ever-changing line-up of gay and/or gay-oriented events including the International Film Festival, Modernism Week, International Bear Convergence, Coachella, Cinema Diverse (LGBTQ film festival), and, of course, the infamous White Party.

What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite to eat?

Being a resort town, there’s no shortage of great restaurants, but my favorite lunch place is Lulu California Bistro, with menu options that are both varied and great value. The customers and staff are always cool, friendly and attractive... what more could you ask for in a restaurant?

For a nice dinner, there’s no place like The Tropicale. The chic décor provides the setting for world-class cuisine with an emphasis on the Pacific Rim. Plush, high-backed semicircular banquettes inside, with a lush, tropical dining patio outside and a mid-century style bar reminiscent of old Hollywood separate the two dining spots.

This is the perfect place, where people gather and Martinis are sipped under the starlit desert sky. Did I mention the staff and both owners are way hot?! :)

Best gay place for a cheap beer or happy hour?

Hunters is located in the center of everything gay (Arenas Rd), serving up cheap drinks every day during happy hour. When you’ve had your fill, there are several other bars and restaurants, all within two blocks of one another in this gayborhood.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

Chill Bar is the coolest bar on Arenas. It also hosts Scorpion Room, the hottest club in Palm Springs.

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

I’ve met the best and brightest people at World Gym, a gay-owned and operated establishment. I also attend the monthly socials that the LGBT Center hosts at different venues all over town.

Where you can we go to get the best view of Palm Springs?

For a view like no other, soar to the top of Mount San Jacinto on the famous Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, it’s the world’s largest rotating tram car. Once you reach the top (8,516 feet), enjoy the bar, two restaurants, observation decks (complete with sweaty, hot hikers) and over 50 miles of hiking trails!
