Gay Local Tips in New York

Insider Tips New York: It's New York, baby!

Almost every corner of New York City has served as a scenario for LGBT history. Discover one of the capitals of gay culture with art dealer Jeremey. Our host in NYC gives you a selection of bars, restaurants and historic venues to fully enjoy your time in the city that never sleeps.

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

It's New York, baby! Many come looking for love, a career change or to just be part of the nightlife. New York City is a haven for gay culture and society. When you think of gay history, New York is number one: it's the city of Stonewall, Paris is Burning, The Roxy club and Christopher Street.

Today, New York hosts the most diverse gay community in the world. Most other cities can only offer one gay neighborhood. But, here in New York, we live side-by-side with the rest of the community.

If you're looking for a place to go you can choose from Greenwich, East Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, Harlem, Washington Heights... and that's just Manhattan. The gay love exists in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, too.

What's the best gay event that takes place in your city?

There are so many! New York Pride is one, the Mermaid Parade, and nothing beats the Halloween Parade. It’s New York; no place in the world can match our nightlife and all the options it offers.

What's your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch or dinner?

That's just it! In New York, I'm free to eat wherever I choose. I don't have to worry about the restaurant being gay or gay-friendly. So, I just go where the food is good and the vibe is right.

But if I had to choose... I'd name three places. At Mexicue, I love their Mexicue Mule and Margaritas. At Harlem Tavern I can check out the local gay hotties and have an amazing meal for a good price. Plus, the vibe is very casual. Then Corner Social, also in Harlem, is three blocks from home and has amazing music.

Oh! I was about to forget: Lips! OMG, the best weekend brunch I ever had. Their drag show is fantastic but the food is really what does it! And the BBar in the East Village make the best American pancakes you'll ever taste.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?

Evolve on 58th and 2nd Ave. A great outdoor space tucked away in Midtown. Great music, good vibe.

We're ready to go dancing... what are your favorite gay clubs?

Industry, Rebar and Monster

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?

Barracuda in Chelsea.

Best place to hang with the local LGBT crowd?

Hell's Kitchen: most of the bars are social hangouts and lounges.

Where should we start our gay tour in New York?

The first place you should see is Stonewall on Christopher Street, then visit all of Greenwich Village and West and East Village. Then move onto Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen: LGBT history is everywhere in New York City. If you're here over summer, make sure you spend a weekend in Fire Island, too! ●
