Gay Local Tips in Atlanta

Insider tips Atlanta: All fun and no discrimination

Paul and David invite you to enjoy Atlanta. This surprising city has a lot to offer: follow our hosts' tips to make the most out of your journey. Connect with the global gay community and stay like a gay local.

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

The size and friendliness of the gay population makes Atlanta a fun place. The warm weather means lots of shirtless men in Piedmont Park and jogging the streets of Midtown.

What is the best gay event that takes place in your city?

The JoiningHearts.org Main Pool Party Event in July, Atlanta Pride in October and the ForTheKid.org Toy Party in December.  These and other organizations like JerusalemHouse.org, Chris180.org and AidAtlanta.org put on several great for-a-good-cause fundraising events throughout the year.

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?

In our neighborhood, Tuk-Tuk (inspired by Thai street food) is our go-to for lunch.  We have awesome dinner options in our neighborhood too – Saltyard (small-plates cuisine boasts of seasonal flavors) and Watershed (local, seasonal, soulful dishes inspired by Southern tradition).  Atlanta is a “Foodies Paradise”.  Venture out anywhere, especially along the beltline, to experience the Best of Atlanta.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer? & Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?

Midtown and other neighborhoods are now mixed.  10th Street and Piedmont or “The Corner” is still considered the “center of gay life” in Midtown and now features a rainbow crosswalk.  The Corner is host to a number of gay bars and restaurants.  Don’t miss “Sunday Funday” starting at Zocalo between 3-4pm before moving to TEN, G’s and Blake’s later that evening.  It is a unique outdoor experience where people hang out socializing on the outdoor terraces.

Atlanta is home to many microbreweries – check them out for their tasting nights and other events.

Which famous gay person is from your city?

As of this year, Atlanta is #1 in film and TV production beating out LA and New York so the list of famous gays here is growing fast.  Don’t be surprised to come upon location shoots or run into your favorite actor at a restaurant, in the gym or just walking down the street.

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?

Jungle and The Heretic are the current top dance clubs

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?

By law, Atlanta doesn’t do happy hours, but for Sunday Funday, Zocalo & TEN are where you want be.

Where to start a gay tour in your home city?

First, get a CityPass or similar for discounts or free access to museums and more.  Our biggies are World of Coke, GA Aquarium, High Museum and Bicycle Tours of Atlanta along the Beltline.  There is also the Ballet, Opera, Symphony, Fox Theatre and many other arts and concert venues.

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

There always seems to be something happening in Atlanta.  Many of the activities can be found in the local “gay rags”.  We follow the non-profit organizations and plan much of our social time around their events.

Best place to be surrounded by the local gays?

“The Corner” mentioned above, and jogging or walking your dog through Piedmont Park or along the Beltline.

How gay-friendly is your home city?

Atlanta is very diversified. Holding hands and in kissing in public in Midtown is a common sight.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

Lots of them in Midtown! Henry’s, Zocalo, Campagnolo, 10th & Piedmont, The Flying Biscuit, The Lawrence.  We also recommend venturing out to other areas in Midtown, East Atlanta, West Midtown, Virginia Highland and Inman Park.

What is gay life like in Atlanta?

Atlanta has a large and friendly gay population.  There are countless numbers of gay organizations and sporting teams to join.

Atlanta provides many great business and social opportunities.  It has one of the highest concentrations of Fortune 1000 companies (with Diversity policies) and the busiest airport in the United States combined with a relatively low cost of living when compared to other major cities.

What are your favourite gay venues in Atlanta?

We look forward to Sunday Funday each week to catch up with “everyone”.  Piedmont Park and the Beltline offer an opportunity to get outside to exercise and enjoy the shirtless “scenery”.
