Gay Local Tips in Copenhagen

Copenhagen: This city will welcome you open-arms

Meet Nicki! Nicki loves hosting gay and he is ready to share his insider tips to the community!

What makes Copenhagen a favorite gay destination?

Copenhagen is the most wonderful city to live in. We have everything the big cities have, yet Copenhagen have something that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. Of course I'm talking about the “Hygge”! Whether you are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual or just a weird looking unicorn, you can always find the Hygge in Copenhagen. Not even our Swedish neighbors can get enough of us, and you will most likely meet them drunk at the local gay bars refusing to take the train home.

What is the best gay event that takes place in Copenhagen?

The yearly pride week is the most amazing week in the year where thousands of people join the parade from all over the world to support the rights of the LGBT community. It runs from the 15th to the 20th of August in 2017. End July the MIIX Film Festival takes place with outdoor events in a park where a film is displayed on a big outdoor cinema canvas.

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?

I'm a huge fan of cooking, and whenever I want to treat myself with a luxurious experience I would go to the Red Box located at Store Kongensgade. It is a Chinese-French fusion restaurant and the quality and atmosphere is the best in Copenhagen.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?

Let us be honest here. Nothing in Copenhagen is cheap. However for 5-6 € you can get a good cold beer brewed in Denmark everywhere. If it is the café environment you are searching for, I would recommend Oscar, but if you are searching for pubs and bars you should find yourself comfortable in the gay street, Studiestræde.

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?

There is apparently no gay bars in Copenhagen that can make a decent cocktail. But if you want wonderful cocktails I would recommend “Twenty Seven” at Vandkunsten.

Which famous LGBTQ personality is from Copenhagen?

The one and only, the King of cream, the most smiling man on earth - Ole Henriksen. Unfortunately he is from the wrong side of Denmark and not a real Copenhagener.
Not even Hans Christian Andersen is from Copenhagen, however he spent a huge part of his life living and writing here, so he will be the best choice.

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?

If there is room, the best gay place to dance is either Cozy bar or Never Mind Bar. There is poles and mirrors - everything to get the most of your forbidden dance moves.

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?

Oscar bar cafe is the place to go if you want to take advantage of the happy hour offer. It would most likely be beer.

Where to start a gay tour in Copenhagen?

The Copenhagen gay bars are never predictable, and some of my wildest nights has been on a Tuesday evening where nothing could have predicted so much party on such a normal weekday. My best advice would be to scan the bars and choose the one that isn't empty, and neither full. The best rule is to open the door to the bar and cry out IKEA. If the people start to say cheers and speak in a singing tone, you would want to choose another bar that doesn't have that many drunk Swedish people ;)

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

Gays are everywhere in Copenhagen, and they would usually not depend on one special bar/cafe. To both experience the gay community and be surrounded by it, Oscar bar cafe is at the moment the best choice. Keep in mind that everything in Copenhagen is gay friendly, and that is why the gay scene is spread out during the day, and narrowed down in the evening to the gay bars. I would though recommend to go to Centralhjørnet. A bit older audience, but if you want to experience the Hygge - this is the place to go!

How gay-friendly is Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is super gay friendly! We have one of the most secure cities in Europe and the drama that happens is unfortunately the one you make up yourself ;)

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

The People from Copenhagen don't do brunch. That is simply weird for us to eat breakfast at lunch time. However we do a lot of snacking! Yes you were thinking correct! DANISH PASTRY! The rule of thumb is, the more weird and nasty it looks, the better it taste! Be sure to try the Romkugle, the Spandager, the snegl and most important, the hindbærsnitte! It doesn't get better than this.

What is gay life like in Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is simply wonderful. And to be gay in this city is the luckiest thing that have ever happened to me. You are equally treated and it is normal to see gay people in the city scene. People welcome you with open arms in this city and I can only say that I'm very very proud of this beautiful old town with good values.

What are your favourite gay venues in Copenhagen?

Everything in Copenhagen is gay friendly. However there is only one specific place that do gay theatre and plays. It is called bøssehuset (The gay House) and is located at Christiania. My best recommendation would be to rent a city-bike and explore the city. Just remember a bag of Danish pastries!
