Gay Local Tips in Melbourne

Melbourne : Fun night out - be exactly who you are

Meet Cal, "a passionate late night cook" now at the stage of a break with his profession life as lawyer. Welcome to Melbourne, Cal says, the city with the most chilled-out vibe for life as gay or anyone that comes. Cal describes himself as a friendly, down-to-earth guy who is more than happy to share his home, neighborhood and city with visitors from around the world. And according to the misterb&b guests, Cal and his partner are the best hosts that make you feel at home and share a sense of the Melbourne life.

What makes Melbourne a favorite gay destination?
Melbourne is super friendly and was recently voted the world’s most liveable city. It’s chilled out and relaxed and this attitude is reflected in the local gay scene. It is easy to be who you are here.

How gay-friendly is your home city?
Melbourne is chilled, and so are the attitudes towards men who love men and women who love women.

What is gay life like in Melbourne?
It’s pretty causal. We are free to be exactly who we are. That’s how we like it. I really hope that everyone that comes to the city could blend in with the vibe and take it with you.

Which famous gay person is from your city?
Kylie Minogue was born here!!! She’s not gay but we love her and she’s ours.

Where to start a gay tour in your home city?
Melbourne is Australia’s cultural capital and the arts precinct is where it’s at. I would say Southbank/South Melbourne is a great place to start , with finding public art and stylish retailers all around, checking comtemporary art museum and taking river cruises etc...

What is the best gay event that takes place in Melbourne?
Midsumma Festival is awesome, but if you don’t mind a short (90 minute) drive to a small Swiss-Italian founded town just north of the city, The ChillOut Festival held in early March in Daylesford is totally tops! It is the biggest queer pride in regional Australia, and it offers this very relaxed let your hair down atomosphere in this special town. The town is painted pink for a weekend and everyone has the best time.

Best place to be surrounded by the local gays?
Collingwood is where it all hangs out. Take a walk here at night and you will find few nice places crowded with local gays.

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?
St Ali’s in South Melbourne is everything people love about the city. Located down a back lane in a converted factory building you can get delicious eats. It may be a bit hard to locate but it is worth the effort. You will enjoy the friendly atmosphere, a touch of vintage surrounding, and a special meal.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?
Definitely the Laird Hotel in Collingwood. It’s quite a historical gay venue and very well-known both local and international. There couldn't be a better choice to have a nice cool beer at their great beer garden out the back, and yup, it is cheap and the men are men.

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?
Go to the Emerson at Sunday evening. The boys are buff and the drinks are stiff!

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?
For the younger crowd, Poof Doof wouldn't let you down. The Peel is popular too.

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?
It’s Hump Day on Wednesday at Sircuit Bar. Fun relaxed vibe.

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?
The Sunday session at the Railway Hotel is always busy. Everyone is friendly so it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?
I would recommend Proud Mary in Collingwood. It is one of my favorite in the city, and everything is delicious!

What are your favourite gay venues in Melbourne?
The Laird Hotel (a full time men only bar) is a Melbourne institution. It’s leather leaning with more than a bear or two, but it’s also super friendly and diverse. Special themes to be hold from time to time.
