Gay Local Tips in Vienna

Insider tips: Welcome to Vienna, birthplace of Marie Antoinette, Freud, and the Lifeball

What makes Vienna a favorite gay destination?
Vienna has tons to offer no matter what season you are planning your trip. However I rather recommend coming in late spring/ early summer because that's when most of the annual gay events are happening plus it's great to chill at the river, enjoy the nightlife or buy yourself away when the sun is out and the weather is lovely.

What is the best gay event that takes place in your city?
"Life ball"- Europes biggest charity event to fight against AIDS, is probably the most impressive, most colorful and spectacular Vienna has ever seen. Every year thousands of people, politicians, celebrities as well as ordinary people, come together to celebrate life and raise their voices to support people living with HIV and AIDS. It's an amazing party with a truly political statement at heart.

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?
My favorite gay friendly restaurant for dinner is MOTTO.
For lunch I totally recommend going to LABSTELLE. Both restaurants offer more of a high end cuisine, a modern and extravagant look and hot waiters as an eye candy for dessert ;).

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?
I would say FELIXX offers great value for price.

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?
VILLAGE is small and always very crowded, but the cocktails and the guys totally make it up.

Which famous gay person is from Vienna?
Conshita Wurst is actually from Graz, but she lives in Vienna for quiet some time now after she has risen like a Phoenix- who doesn't love her no matter gays or straight?

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?
WHY NOT is one of the oldest clubs in Vienna and an institution within the gay party scene. You gonna find yourself hitting the dance floor to current charts and on some nights to some good oldies. The crowd is a good mix of all kind of all ages with a main focus on teens and twens.

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?
Probably MANGO is always a good choice during the week.

Where to start a gay tour in Vienna?
Not far from my apartment, I usually recommend people to hit the city starting with NASCHMARKT, Viennas biggest fresh food market. The choice of restaurants is simply overwhelming. Just take it from there, since the gayborhood is right around the corner.

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?
If you like saunas the legendary KAISERBRÜNDL, the former emperors bathing house, offers both sauna and fun.
If you like it a little more sophisticated, sneak into the gay bookstore LÖWENHERZ and have a cup of coffee and piece of SACHER TORTE at the gay cafe BERG, next to SIGMUND FREUDS former private practice (museum) all within walking distance.

Best place to be surrounded by the local gays?
On a hot summer day the KRAPFENWALD BAD, SCHOENBRUNNER BAD or if you are on a smaller budget also simply at the river bank of the Danube, all offer gay spots and cruising areas.

How gay-friendly is Vienna?
Vienna has significantly become a more popular gay traveling destinations among  recent years. The LIFE BALL, gay adoption, civil union laws as well as the VIENNA GAY PEDESTRIAN STOPPING LIGHTS all over the city, make you feel very comfortable and have changed the way gay people are seen by Austrian people. Walking around holding hands is no issue. The mix of cultures in the city is incredibly high, the crime rate low and MERCER and other studies didn't name VIENNA MOST LIVABLE CITY IN THE WOLRD for the sixth time in a row for no reason! It feels like Vienna doesn't feel the need to proof itself anymore. The party and gay scene might just not be as crazy as Berlin or Tel Aviv.
But the sheer mix of art and culture, astonishing historical buildings, great local and international food, laydback atmosphere and quality of life make it a must see among people who want to explore some old - and some modern Europe.

A gay place for brunch on weekends?
CAFE WILLENDORF offers a giant breakfast buffet for a reasonable price.

What are your favourite gay venues?
If you like partying, the biggest venue probably is the CIRCUS party, multiple floors in and outdoor. My personal favorite is the RHINOPLASTY party at CLUB U since it's more laid back and less commercial. I also can recommend KIBBUTZ Clubbing or MALEFIZ if you you are more of an electro lover. And also the annually VIENNA REGENBOGEN PARADE with its shows and entertainment shouldn't be left unmentioned.
