Gaycation is a documentary that seeks to shine light on all aspects of living for the gay community all over the world. The documentary follows two main actors, Ellen Page and her best friend Ian Daniel, who go across different regions of the world exploring the lives of people in the LGBT community. So far the study has been taken to 5 different countries including India, Japan, Brazil, USA and Jamaica, with each country visit occupying a whole episode.
Ellen and her friend Daniel show the life of different LGBT members and how they are affected by the different cultures and subcultures in their region. Through personal experiences shared by the two hosts plus the contribution of other people in the various episodes, we understand the issue of discrimination and its severity on the LGBT community.
In the series, we also see how various government policies are made to support or discriminate the LGBT community. We also get to understand how our community is affected by the various communities surrounding us, our cultures and our beliefs.
I think Gaycation is a great documentary to watch. For me, it has helped understand that the problems I experience being a member of the LGBT community are shared worldwide. Though in some countries, the LGBT community is handled well than in others, the issues that we face are similar in one way or another. I appreciate Page and Daniel for bringing to light the issues in facing our community. This is a step into the right direction. By shining light on some of the discrimination that LGBT members face, they create a platform for others to stand up and comment or recommend for something to be done to bring change.
