Sydney: Gay vibes

Gay Local Tips in Sydney

Sydney: Gay vibes

Damien is very glad to introduce you to a journey in Sydney. The Australian capital has a lively gay scene. Read his tips and stay like a gay local.

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

It’s a great city and it’s filled with natural beauty. Just think of those sandy beaches and the harbor. On top of that, Sydney is very gay friendly with heaps of gay bars, clubs and great beaches.

What is the best gay event that takes place in your city?

Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, without any doubt! It draws thousands of visitors to Sydney to join the celebrations, it’s an incredibly popular event. It’s about freedom, self-expression and being proud of who you are, of course.

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?

For lunch I’d recommend Shift: great food! The Beresford has a nice meal selection for dinner.

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?

The Beresford! Always full of local boys. Especially on Sunday nights, guys gather there to spend together the last night of their weekend. It’s always so so crowded, if you’re from Sydney you're going to literally bump into someone  you know. Guaranteed!

Which famous gay person is from your city?

Ian Thorpe isn't from Sydney but spends a lot of time here. For those who may not be that familiar with him he is an international swimmer who recently came out of the closet. He has won more Olympic gold medals for Australia than any other sportsman.

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?

Upstairs at the Stonewall Hotel. It deserves to be mentioned not just  because it’s a place to go to on weekends. The Stonewall Hotel made history, it is an institution and a safe heaven for our LGBTIQ+ community. Arq is a great alternative too,  awesome club: penetrating sound, euphoric lighting screens.

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?

Alcohol is highly taxed in Australia, so don’t ever expect to drink at a cheap price.  My recommendation for a Wednesday night would be 'MaleBox' at Stonewall on Oxford Street. MaleBox is always crowded, particularly with gay college boys who don't have early lectures on Thursdays. The Oxford Hotel is also a great place to be!

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

Most definitely Oxford Street. That’s where the main gay bars and shops are concentrated. Make sure to visit the rest of the city. Gay or not several venues need to be explored.

Best place to be surrounded by the local gays?

Darlinghurst and Potts Point are among the most popular areas if you want to enjoy the gay vibe of this city.  So just explore them!

How gay-friendly is your home city?

Sydney goes beyond being just tolerant it’s a very gay friendly city! It’s actually the gay capital in Australia

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

Just anywhere in Darlinghurst and Potts Point.  The restaurants are all great! Enjoy the heat maybe sitting outside in a restaurant or a café in Potts Point, it’s very popular for gays to hang out there.

What is gay life like in Sydney?

Sydney is one of the Gay Capitals in the world. Gay life is great here. There's heaps to do and heaps of gays!

What are your favorite gay venues in Sydney?

Lady Jane beach when the weather is great and The Beresford for a drink and a catch up with friends.
