Gay Local Tips in San Francisco

San Francisco: Too good to be true

Grab your Burning Man attire or just come-as-you-are, the streets of San Francisco will always be waiting for you. Adam is one of our misterb&b hosts in San Francisco. He shares his apartment with his boyfriend in the Castro district and of course he loves it. Read through his tips to enjoy your gay life in " The City".

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

San Francisco has an incredible LGBT history, from Harvey Milk to the Compton Cafeteria riot. It is an extremely progressive city that has always been a haven for gay people. And the parties here are pretty awesome.

What is the best gay event that takes place in San Francisco?

All of the Burning Man- related parties are generally quite gay and very fun. Breakfast of Champions, a New Years' Day party thrown by the camp Space Cowboys, is consistently awesome and mostly locals. Most tourists have a hard time finding the good parties here.

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? Or a nice dinner?

Starbelly in the Castro is perfect for brunch and dinner. Hi Tops is a gay sports bar that also serves delicious foods, and the boys are always cute.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?

Aunt Charlie's in the Tenderloin. They have a sweaty fun party on Thursday nights that's always a good time.

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?

Blackbird. The cocktail menu changes seasonally and is currently Twin Peaks themed, my favorite TV show.

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?

Beaux is a regular gay dance club that is probably most accessible to tourists. But the locals are always looking for mixed parties at mixed clubs like Public Works, Great Northern, and the Midway. Also note that people dress pretty weird here at most clubs (google "Burning Man attire").

Where to start a gay tour in San Francisco?

Definitely Castro and Market street, you'll see the big rainbow flags on top of Soul Cycle!

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

Head to Dolores Park on a sunny weekend day. It'll be super crowded, but if you head to the southwest corner you'll find a bunch of half-dressed gays having fun. Don't be afraid to buy whatever funny treats are offered to you ;)

How gay-friendly is your home city?

San Francisco is extremely gay friendly. With that said, most of the gay people live and hang out towards the center of the City, including the Castro, Mission, Lower Haight, Alamo Square, and SOMA neighborhoods. The northern parts of the City (Marina, Pac Heights, North Beach) are very beautiful but it's mostly straight frat bros and yoga moms.

What is gay life like in San Francisco?

Just too good to be true.
