Gay Local Tips in Rome

Rome: Beauty and the city

No matter the season, hot or cold,  Italy is always a great choice for your trip whether you're planning your holidays at the seaside or an urban weekend get-away. This week our Insider will lead you to the discovery of Rome and its Great Beauty. Fabio is an experienced host on misterb&b and has got plenty of advices for you to enjoy the Eternal City as a gay local. Enjoy this reading!

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

Rome's an open-air museum, and its beauty makes it one of the best travel destinations in the whole world. Not quite sure yet? There's good food, nice weather and an enchanting atmosphere. Your holiday will be flat out unforgettable. Think of all of the fabulous backgrounds for your artsy selfies – and they're free of charge!

What is the best gay event that takes place in your city?

In all fairness, I'll go for Pride (2017 edition coming up next June!). Just a reminder: Gay Olympics will take place in Rome in 2019, with more that 5.000 athletes! You might want to pop by...

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?

For lunch and dinner, I highly recommend Testaccio and the surrounding area, which offers a wide choice of restaurants and traditional trattorias where you can still enjoy the original roman flavours. "Felice" restaurant is a must for pasta “cacio e pepe” (pasta with pecorino cheese and ground black pepper). You can't leave Rome without trying it.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?

"Coming out" and "My bar" are perfect for a beer in good company. You might find the beer choice a bit cheap, but the view over Colosseum is definitely rewarding.

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?

"Bar del Fico", a few steps away from Piazza Navona. I love the cozy atmosphere of the square. Its central location is perfect to continue your night out strolling around the city center, even if you're slightly tipsy. But remember to stay safe!

Which famous gay person is from your city?

Pasolini, writer and director, one of the most remarkable intellectuals of the last century. Friulian by origin, lived most of his life in Rome, grasped the true, multifaceted soul of the city. I recommend his novels ("Ragazzi di vita" or "Una vita violenta") and movies ("Accattone" or "Mamma Roma") to deepen your contact with the city and its recent history.

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?

"Muccassassina" is the best known in Rome and across the Italian gay scene overall. However, don't hesitate to ask your hosts for inside tips! The gay-nights (Amigdala, Glamda, Poppe, Cox, Men2Men) over the weekend rotate between several clubs: good fun for everybody's taste. In the mood for partying on a Monday night? Bear Monday is your go-to.

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?

Campo dei fiori: loads of bars looking out one of the Capital's most popular squares.

Where to start a gay tour in your home city?

I highly recommend visiting Palatino, still popular but off the tourists' beaten path. The sight of the archeological area from the terraces up the hill is priceless. You will enjoy a breathtaking overview of Rome's beauty. That is to say, why be gladiators in the arena when you can be emperors?

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

The gay street, not to far from Colosseum. The best place to meet people and have a chat before heading towards the party.

Best place to be surrounded by the local gays?

As above. Don't miss the chance to visit Trastevere though, get lost in its narrow streets and cross eyes with a stranger. Maybe buy him a drink in one of the tiny little bars scattered all over the area?

How gay-friendly is your home city?

The Capital is affected by the Vatican's influence, needless to say. However, you can go ahead and display affection to your partner, if you wish so. Your contribution to making the city even more gay-friendly will be much appreciated by the community. Do you accept the challenge?

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

"Angelina" by Testaccio. Previously a butcher's shop, the place has been converted in a nice restaurant, very popular for a weekend brunch. It is actually very close to my apartment, but you know… coincidences!

What is gay life like in Rome?

I wouldn't say Rome is that much of a gay capital, not even close to Berlin or Madrid. You can't help falling in love with its treasures, though! It's still one of the most open-minded and welcoming cities in Italy, in my own opinion. Rome is only waiting to be discovered, and has lots of surprises in store for you.

What are your favourite gay venues in Rome?

I can’t specifically think of a place. The perfect night for me is “aperitivo” and dinner with friends. I don't mind where, nice food, fine wine and good company is all I need. And in Rome, it's easy to get the three of them at once.
