Gay Local Tips in London

Insider tips London: Somewhere you won't grow tired of

Our mister of the week has Spanish origins but he is a host in London. Mario invites you to rediscover the venues of one of the top-rated European gay travel destination. London is a city you never get tired of, there's something for everyone and Mario is ready to point you in the right direction.

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?

London is a very gay-friendly city with a very big gay scene. This is probably due to being a huge city (around 10 million people) and the advantage of being an English speaking country.

What is the best gay event that takes place in your city?

I would say that every single weekend is a big gay event. Unfortunately I cannot say that gay pride in London is the best in the world. The weather in the summer does not always help...

But you can find gay bars in Soho (gay area in central London) busy every day of the week. During weekends all bars in Soho are full. There are also clubs and local gay bars (many neighborhoods have gay bars).

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? a nice dinner?

Balans, in Old Compton Street (the gayest street in Soho), and many pubs in the area.

Best gay bar for a cheap beer?

All gay bars have similar prices. And you can get a pint of beer in any bar. My favourites are Circa, The Yard, and Rupert St (all in Soho).

Best gay bar for a refreshing cocktail?

Rupert St

Which famous LGBTQI celebrity is from your city?

The list could be endless.

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?

XXL: Initially a club for bears (hence its name), but although you can indeed see some bears, most of the guys are fit and young (mainly late 20’s and 30’s and it is male only). If you want to see hot topless guys this is the place to go!

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?

Most bars have happy hours on weekdays and even weekends before 8pm.

Where to start a gay tour in your home city?

Soho is right in the centre of the city. Within walking distance you have Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Houses of Parliament, Oxford Street (for shopping)...

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?

Bars in Soho at the weekends.

Best place to be surrounded by the local gays?

Even though Soho is the gay area, living there is prohibitively expensive. I think the main gay residential area is Clapham. I live there! I wonder why...

How gay-friendly is your home city?

100%

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

Bill’s.

What is gay life like in London?

Amazing. Apart from gay bars and clubs, there are gyms full of gays, gay groups of everything (there is for example a gay football league with many teams...)

What are your favourite gay venues in London?

In Soho:

The Yard, Rupert St, Ku bar, Circa, XXL (this last one is a club, not right in Soho).

And although not my favourite, probably the most popular venues for very young people (early 20’s) are the bar g.a.y-bar and the club g.a.y-Heaven

For slightly older people (late 30’s and 40’s) I’d say The Duke of Wellington and Comptons.

In Clapham:

2 Brewers and The Bridge
