In the aftermath of the attack, we strongly believe it is important to support the LGBT community in Orlando. And to us, it translates into encouraging you to discover Orlando as a gay destination and to travel there. This is why we asked this gay couple in Orlando to share their best tips on their beloved city. Meet Alberto and John! Living in downtown Orlando, they proudly show you their multicultural and LGBT-friendly neighbourhood.

 

What makes your city a favorite gay destination?
Most people come to visit the parks, but in fact Orlando has so much more to offer and is a wonderful thriving city. 

 

How gay-friendly is your home city?
The most gay friendly and welcoming city you can imagine. Downtown Orlando is a gay mecca!! 

 

What is gay life like in Orlando?
It is comfortable. it is welcoming. Gay life in downtown Orlando is just life. Gays and straights mix and hang out and eat and drink in the same places. There is a thriving cultural scene and the city, including the LGBT community, have embraced out Major League Soccer team. And there is a great gay bar, Stonewall, right next to the stadium. 

  

What is the best gay event that takes place in your city?
Orlando Pride, held in the heart of downton every October, is amazing. Three days of parties, concerts, a fabulous parade and fireworks. Gay Days, held each June, is one of the biggest gay parties in the world. Every month downtown hosts Third Thursday, where thousands (mixed gay and straight) for an evening of sights, sounds, food, shopping and cosmopolitan living.

 

Best place to socialize with the local gay community?
For runners and walkers, the Orlando Frontrunners meet three times a week. 

 

What is your favorite gay establishment to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?
Pom Poms Teahouse and Sanwicheria is fun for lunch and Maxine's a great for dinner. 

 

Ready to go dancing--what is the best gay dance club?
This is very sad to say, but Pulse was THE dance club in Orlando. Southern Nights is a favorite of many. 

 

Which gay bar offers the best happy hour on a Wednesday?
Savoy is really great! 

 

A gay place for brunch on weekends?
Dexters or Hamburger Mary's.

 

What are your favourite gay venues in Orlando?
We love the Dr Phillips Performing Arts Center but there are so many options offering so much variety depending on what you are looking for.
